Purpose of Position

To provide direct, individualized support to students with special needs so they may fully participate in the program alongside their peers. This role focuses on fostering inclusion-not separation-by delivering appropriate accommodations and one-on-one or small-group guidance. Inclusion Support Staff serve as a bridge between the child, their family, and the larger program, ensuring that all children have access to a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate after-school experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must have specialized training or demonstrable experience working with children with special needs in inclusive environments.

  • Ability to identify and implement accommodations to meet a wide range of developmental, behavioral, and cognitive needs.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for liaising with families, program staff, and external support teams.

  • Must be able to reliably commute to and from the program site(s) in a timely manner.

  • Must submit Medical and Criminal Record Clearances.

  • Experience with behavior management, sensory strategies, or developmental interventions is highly preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct 1:1 or small-group support to students with special needs to help them access and succeed within the general after-school program.

  • Collaborate with the program team to implement accommodations and modify activities to support inclusion.

  • Serve as a liaison to families-communicating daily updates, strategies used, progress, and any concerns.

  • Maintain consistent communication with program leadership to ensure alignment in behavior supports, safety protocols, and inclusion strategies.

  • Supervise and assist students during all program components, including recreation, enrichment, snack time, and transitions.

  • Encourage positive peer interactions, problem-solving, and participation using respectful and developmentally appropriate strategies.

  • Adapt daily schedules as needed to provide a least restrictive environment that meets each student's unique needs.

  • Monitor and document student behavior, goals, and progress when applicable.

  • Respond to behavioral or emotional challenges using trained interventions and appropriate crisis management techniques.

  • Support with personal care as needed (e.g., diapering or hygiene assistance).

  • Administer first aid/CPR and practice universal precautions after specialized training.

  • Participate in team meetings and planning discussions to share insights and ensure continuity of care.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of inclusive education and developmental accommodations.

  • Ability to self-manage and work independently within a structured team.

  • Excellent communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.

  • Comfortable building rapport with students, staff, and parents.

  • Ability to remain calm and compassionate under pressure.
