Join us in changing peoples' lives! The Hospitality Training Academy (HTA) is a non-profit organization and a labor-management partnership between UNITE HERE Local 11 and contributing hotel and food service employers in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, and the state of Arizona.
The HTA is designed to improve Los Angeles' and Arizona’s tourism and hospitality industry by increasing the skill level of its workforce and moving workers up the career ladder. Before the pandemic, the hospitality industry was one of the largest growing secs- tors in Southern California, with a projected growth rate higher than all other jobs in the region, and the nation. Right now, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our HTA team as we expand our program and build back up after the recovery from the pandemic.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Chef Instructor will be responsible for hands-on culinary class instruction conforming with HTA’s curriculum and lessons to a widely diverse student population. The Chef Instructor will support the HTA Director of Food & Beverage Training through the expansion and implementation of HTA’s culinary apprenticeship program. The Chef Instructor will report to the HTA Director of Food & Beverage Training. This role is temporary!
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Demonstrates the ability to teach in a manner consistent with HTA’s objectives and adapt to the
Director of Food & Beverage Training, adhering to HTA’s standards and policies.
• Provides collaborative input into the development of curriculum, tests, worksheets, and other teaching
materials, and contributes to improve the effectiveness of HTA’s programs.
• Engages, motivates, and maintains students’ interest in active learning to create an effective, positive,
and focused learning environment that promotes students’ understanding of program concepts, and
encourages them to ask questions and show respect for the instructors, fellow classmates, and HTA
staff.
• Delivers clear, organized, and understandable lectures, and facilitates active, learner-centered
discussions.
• Assures that classes are conducted in a manner that complies with principles of food safety and
sanitation code.
• Supervises Assistant Instructors to ensure proper job performance.
• Professionally represents HTA in the community and actively engages HTA’s potential and existing
industry partners, developing excellent collaborative relationships with them to encourage them to
participation.
• Interacts sensitively and positively with students, staff and faculty from widely diverse cultural and
socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Provides students with the knowledge and skills to become successful, work-ready employees upon
their successful completion of the culinary program.
• Performs other duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
• Able to meet schedule requirements in order to teach all scheduled HTA culinary classes as assigned
• Able to use own vehicle for food pickups and other HTA offsite duties.
• Ability to interact in a collaborative manner with others, including staff, faculty, students, and industry
professionals.
• Ability to commute to companies or partners sites and regularly communicates with HTA’s industry
partners to help facilitate our students’ employment with them.
• Has strong emotional intelligence and can build rapport quickly to meets students’ needs.
• Strong proactive critical thinking and problem-solving skills required.
• Excellent and effective written and verbal presentation skills and interpersonal communication skills.
• Demonstrates a dynamic speaking voice and speaking style.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite - PowerPoint, Word, and Excel and video conference platforms
