The mission of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Inc., (“JALC”) is to entertain, enrich, and expand a global community for jazz through performance, education, and advocacy. From college students to young stars, from working professionals to celebrated masters, we present quality jazz for an ever-increasing audience in an unprecedented range of activities and a variety of venues. We are dedicated to lifting audiences and bringing people together with substance and with integrity. JALC has created a dynamic platform where our key constituents – jazz artists (beginner to grizzled veteran), fans (casual listeners to advanced scholars), educators (local band leaders to leading artist-educators) and advocates (local community advocates to important national promoters) – can meet, engage, learn, and work towards common objectives.
The Teaching Assistant is the primary support for students enrolled in the Summer Jazz Academy (Bard College). The Teaching Assistant supports the residence and learning life of high school students at Bard College during the two-week program (July 12-27). The Teaching Assistant is responsible for the safety of students in their care, guides students in their personal and musical growth, and serves as a role model in attitude, behavior and actions. They are responsible for explaining expectations for student behavior and assisting students in adhering to the Jazz Academy policies for students and staff. In addition, the Counselor/Teaching Assistant is responsible for assisting the faculty in music classes, rehearsals and for teaching daily-facilitated practice sessions and small group rehearsals.

When: July 12-27, 2025
Where: Bard College, (Annandale-On-Hudson, New York) and Jazz at Lincoln Center (NYC)
(plus room and board at Bard College and The Juilliard School)
Teaching Assistant Role & Responsibilities
- Serve as a teaching assistant in classes/ensembles working directly with faculty
- Monitor rehearsals and practice/jam sessions as needed
- Teach/manage evening jam sessions 60-75 min small group sessions that support ensemble and private lesson work. Including calling tunes, setting session parameters and etiquette, managing students, among other duties.
- Rehearse and perform at least once a week as a member of the CTA (Counselor/Teaching Assistant) Ensemble
- Schedule daily time for personal practice and rejuvenation
Counselor Role & Responsibilities
- Share and maintain a healthy living environment with students ranging in ages from 15-18 years old
- Provide one-on-one personal/academic support to students as necessary
- Patrol residence during night duty
- Remain highly visible to students and faculty throughout each day except for personal time.
General Expectations
- Function effectively with students and work cooperatively with peers, staff, faculty and leadership
- Able to remain calm under pressure and comfortably manage emergent situations
- Perform duties both inside and outside regardless of weather
- Physically able to assist with class preparations, including copying, music distribution, arranging stands and chairs, and working with students and maintenance staff to ensure a clean and well-maintained residence facility and others as assigned.
- Balance the primary goal of supporting student learning with a commitment to self-care (adequate sleep, physical exercise, nutrition, mental acuity)
- Carry out any other related duties as assigned by the program's administrative staff
