Classification: Non-exempt, full-time

Pay Rate: $33.02/hour ($64,389 annualized)

Reports to: Director of Education

Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP) is looking to hire a full-time educator to facilitate K-12 and public programming throughout Brooklyn Bridge Park and indoors at the Environmental Education Center. The ideal candidate is an experienced, engaging STEM educator and facilitator who can teach a wide range of ecological subjects to highly diverse audiences. As the programs are experiential and inquiry-based, the role is ideal for an educator who has the ability to pivot among different pedagogical approaches and subject matters seamlessly. The candidate sincerely loves to teach and to spark lifelong learning and curiosity about the environment, both natural and built, in those with whom they engage.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teach K-12 field trips both outside throughout the park and Environmental Education Center.

  • Contributing to the ongoing creation, evaluation and refinement of environmental education curriculum and activities.

  • Facilitating drop-in public education programs, including weekly Open Hours in the Environmental Education Center and seasonal seining, rod & reel events, and other public programs.

  • Preparing, transporting, setting up, and breaking down education program materials at sites across Brooklyn Bridge Park.

  • Participating in the department-wide maintenance of education spaces and supplies.

  • Assisting with weekly animal care tasks, including feedings and light husbandry, as needed.

  • Acting as an on-site contact and support for education volunteers.

  • Representing and/or presenting at internal and external forums, including all staff meetings, education-related trainings, expos, workshops, and conferences.

  • Staffing Park-wide public program and fundraising events, community outreach initiatives, and other activities, as required.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of urban environmental science, ecology, estuaries, waterfront history, and sustainability.

  • Experience teaching diverse audiences in informal education and/or outdoor setting.

  • ·Strong classroom management skills and ability to adapt teaching style and content to meet the diverse needs and age ranges of students.

  • ·Self-starter with a can-do attitude that feels comfortable working both independently and in a collaborative team environment.

  • Strong time management and communication skills.

  • Commitment to positive youth development and DEIJ work in outdoor, park-like settings.

  • Comfort engaging with and speaking to the public.

  • Excitement and desire to jump in and try new areas of content, including art and culture.

  • Ability to enthusiastically engage and actively participate in creative processes, along with fellow educators and peers.

  • Hardworking, self-motivated, and detail oriented.

  • Ability to balance multiple projects and tasks.

  • Flexible and solutions oriented.

  • Team player.

  • At least 4 years teaching experience in these subject areas in a formal or informal K-12 setting preferred.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Environmental Science, Ecology, Marine Biology, Museum Studies, or related field preferred.

Working Conditions:

Programs take place inside and outside in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.). Successful candidates will possess a(n)/the:

  • Willingness to be in nature, get dirty, and handle live animals.

  • Ability to crouch, bend, squat, and lift up to 40 pounds.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk across the length of the Park, and navigate uneven terrain (e.g. shoreline).

  • Ability to work occasional extra hours or weekends for special programs.

  • Ability and comfort in wading into water with waders on.

  • Either a valid driver’s license or ability to ride a bicycle, preferred.

Schedule:

Typically, Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30am-5:30pm; flexibility to help the team cover other activities.
