JOB SUMMARY:
Conducts and coordinates in-service and formal education programs to enhance the skills of patient care employees, plans programs and prepares related instructional materials, holds the authority, accountability and responsibility for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) activities, conducts competency assessment activities for assigned areas, provides leadership in the work setting by serving in a variety of roles to support organizational goals, conducts new-hire patient care employee orientation program.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.
2. Follows the St. Joseph Medical Center guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).
3. Promotes a culture of safety for patients and employees by collaborating with leadership to prevent medical errors in a non-punitive environment.
4. Collects pertinent information related to potential educational needs of the patient care staff, analyzes the assessment data to determine the target audience and the learner needs, and validates identified needs with the needs and goals of the organization and the professional practice councils.
5. Identifies the general purpose and education objectives for each learning activity, identifies and collaborates with content experts and outside community resources to develop activities, individualizes learning activity content to the target audience (e.g. basic education, experience, and preferred method of learning), the resources available, and the domains of learning to facilitate the learner's achievement of the education objectives, uses available evidence, including research data, in the education process, ensures that the planned educational activities implemented are consistent with the general purpose, objectives and content outline, defines criteria for successful completion and verification of participation for each education activity, assures education activities are varied, interactive and designed to facilitate the adult learning process, assures summaries of evaluation responses, participant and presenter feedback, self-reported achievement, and retrospective and concurrent data collection activities and reports are shared with appropriate persons and councils, and are used to plan or revise future activities, effectively coordinates the facilities, materials, equipment and technologies used for education purposes.
6. Demonstrates expertise in clinical area of specialization with in-depth understanding of current scientific concepts, professional practice standards, and relevant statutes and regulations maintains continuing competency through self-evaluation, participating in ongoing educational activities related to practice knowledge and professional issues, and seeking of experiences that reflect current theories and methods of teaching, learning, and presentation, ensures educational programs are designed to be sensitive to meet the cultural needs of a diverse population.
7. Conducts and coordinates annual competency assessment activities for assigned areas formulates recommendations to improve nursing practice or outcomes, assists in the design of methods to modify or eliminate barriers to effective nursing care, assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of guidelines and procedures for nursing practice, conducts assessments, validates competency of new patient care employees related to technical skills, critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and other related job skills.
8. Provides leadership by serving in the roles of educator, facilitator, change agent and consultant to promote the professional growth of peers and other staff, serves as a role model in support of clinical care, nursing process, patient assessment, and continuum of care issues, participates in intra- and interdisciplinary teams that evaluate professional development.
9. Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of patient care improvement activities, including unit based and performance improvement activities in collaboration with unit leadership, participates in the monitoring of performance of nursing employees to ensure patient safety, application of nursing standards of care, and quality of care.
10. Collaborates and participates with SJMC Nursing Center for Learning as appropriate.
11. Supportive of the compliance program set forth by SJMC in a manner which:
a. Upholds the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance.
b. Adheres to and helps to enforce all compliance policies relevant to his/her area.
c. Assures timely compliance education as requested by the Compliance Officer and/or through corporate initiatives.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
WORK EXPERIENCE:
· 3 years of clinical experience on an acute care inpatient hospital unit.
· Comprehensive knowledge of nursing procedures, processes, and acute care organizations.
· Experience with program development, group presentations, and project management preferred.
LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
· Current Texas RN Nursing License
· Certification in area of nursing specialty preferred
· American Heart Association Basic Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation Program certifications required.
EDUCATION & TRAINING:
· RN Graduate from an approved/accredited School of Nursing required.
· Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.
· Master's degree in nursing or related field preferred.
