GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to enforce all local, federal, and state laws relating to the public’s safety and welfare in the County. Provide a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and parents at area high schools. In addition, as needed the School Resource Officer conducts vehicular patrols in designated County areas, maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems in the neighborhood, and respond to emergency service calls.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  1. Provide security for assigned school, assisting in the maintenance of order and public safety, and the well-being of students, faculty, staff and visitors, and patrol premises and parking area.
  2. Initiate, enforce, and monitor compliance with school safety procedures.
  3. Instruct students, faculty, and staff in crime prevention and conflict resolution methods; provide instruction in law obedience.
  4. Present Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) classes as assigned; prepares and presents lesson plans; advises school officials and teachers on various issues pertaining to drug awareness and prevention.
  5. Provide individual and group counseling for students as requested or necessary.
  6. Monitor student behavior during lunch, between classes, and other times as necessary to maintain order.
  7. Identify gang activity and other potential problem areas; determines if violations of laws occur on school grounds; investigate offenses; recommend and/or implement corrective action.
  8. Communicate with parents to discuss law violations; refers students and/or parents to outside organizations for assistance as appropriate. Participate in school extracurricular activities, providing security as required.
  9. Respond to and provide leadership and coordination in emergency and high-risk situations.
  10. Document contact with teachers and students; maintain incident records and prepare related reports.
  11. Perform general patrol duties as required, to include responding to emergency calls and public calls for assistance, maintaining order and public safety, apprehending and arresting law violators and criminal suspects, issuing traffic citations and summons, and assisting with criminal investigations.
  12. Prepare cases for prosecution and provide court testimony as necessary.
  13. Perform routine service duties to include escort services and crowd control at special events; respond to citizens’ inquiries and concerns.
  14. Prepares and submits detailed work records and reports; maintain assigned equipment and vehicles.
  15. Receives and responds to citizens’ inquiries, concerns, and complaints concerning law enforcement activities.

Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Good problem-solving abilities;

Knowledge of South Carolina Code of Laws;

Knowledge of policies and procedures of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office;

Physical and mental abilities for known law enforcement work and in apprehending suspects;

Qualified to operate various assigned weapons;

Ability to work extended hours and remain on-call for duties;

Ability to safely operate vehicles during high speeds;

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;

Knowledge of County roadways and communities;

Basic computer and radio communication skills;

Customer service and interpersonal skills;

Trained and certified in law enforcement criminal operations to include: domestic violence, firearms, property investigations, traffic, and larceny;


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

The educational requirement for this position is: Completion of high school/GED.

Education may not be substituted for experience.

Related-experience required: 2 years.

Experience may be substituted for education.

Certifications, licenses, professional designations, or other qualifications required for this position include: Complete SC Criminal Justice Academy

Certifications, licenses, professional designations, or other qualifications preferred for this position include: Valid SC Driver’s License

  • Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus)
