Faculty Teacher

Brehm Mission:

To empower students with learning disabilities and differences to recognize and optimize their potential throughout their lives. Through partnership among students, administration, faculty, staff, parents, board, alumni, researchers and the professional community.

Position Overview:

Under the guidance of the Director of Education, Faculty plans, implements, and assesses instruction for assigned courses in accordance with individual student needs and the course's scope and sequence. Faculty executes daily responsibilities of a caseload in which s/he manages the individualized programming for students. Faculty participates in meetings, bi-annual parent conferences, yearly strategic plan, and other elected or determined meetings. Involvement in extracurricular activities and staff development is an expectation.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create a structured, yet flexible, environment that promotes curiosity, creativity and learning
  • Design, maintain, and refine the scope and sequence for courses taught
  • Develop and implement lesson plans
  • Contribute in the revisions and initial creation of Individual Holistic Education Plan (IHEP) to meet the needs of each student
  • Complete IEP's: coordinate and compile information from multiple sources and communicate and/or implement current levels of performance, related services, accommodations, transition plans, and goals and objectives
  • Develop strategies to meet the needs of each individual student using IHEP or IEP goals while documenting these goals in lesson plans, grade books and progress reports
  • Create student profiles: review files, enter information on review and recommendations, and analyze and synthesize information to make program recommendations and devise interventions on an on-going basis
  • Conduct on-going assessments of student progress and adjust instruction in order to accommodate and meet student needs
  • Provide abundant opportunities for students to acquire information, communicate thoughts and use reasoning
  • Demonstrate the highest degree of professionalism in daily encounters with students, staff, parents, and the community
  • Demonstrate positive attitude toward flexibility, creativity, collaboration, cooperation and communication
  • Complete quarterly progress reports and assign semester grades
  • Administer, score, and interpret Woodcock Johnson Testing and other standardized tests
  • Teach a variety of strategies and self-management skills
  • Supervise student behavior during class time, class transitions, and extracurricular activities
  • Purchase classroom materials with proper preauthorization; maintain and inventory materials
  • Oversee student assignment book, organizational skills, time-management skills, and general affect
  • Communicate bi-monthly or as needed with advisee's parents
  • Communicate daily with Dorm Parents to update them on their student's academic progress
  • Actively pursue professional development through professional review, conferences, workshops, educational courses, readings, and formal and informal assessment of instruction, professional goals, and effectiveness of interaction with student, parents and colleagues
  • Attend and participate in meetings, conferences, strategic planning; and training
  • Be an active and prepared member of the Team process
  • Interface with all facets of program which include but are not limited to Speech and Language, Health and Well-Being, and Student Life
  • Provide support for extracurricular activities
  • Read and adhere to the policies and expectations set forth in the Policy and Procedure Manual, Teacher Handbook and Student Handbook

Experience:

  • Training in risk management and health and safety protocols
  • Training in remedial reading and writing techniques
  • Knowledge and application of behavioral and discipline management
  • Working knowledge of learning disabilities, learning styles, Brehm competencies, Bloom's taxonomy, State Standards, and the IEP process
  • Knowledge of policies, protocols, systems, and procedures established to enhance student programming.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic interventions for students with learning differences
  • Basic knowledge of special education policies and procedures
  • Experience in administering and/or creating compliant IEPs

Professional Credentials:

  • Illinois State Licensure with an LBS1 endorsement/certification
  • Courses and training specific to: area of instruction, assessment, characteristics of learning disabilities and method.
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited post secondary institution in education or a related field
  • Heavy consideration with endorsements in History, English, and Elective and are willing to pursue the LBS1 endorsement

Working Hours:

  • Academic year - August through June
  • Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Occasional nights and weekends to provide coverage for special events
  • At least three weekends per academic year for parent teacher conferences, strategic plan and student move-in
  • Additional summer work available based on need

Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to meet the Illinois State Board of Education employment requirements including pass a physical exam, TB test, and background check
  • Ability to pass a driving background check
  • A valid driver's license, or ability to obtain one within thirty days of hire
  • Ability to provide proof of valid vehicle insurance

Compensation:

  • Salary based on years of teaching experience, degrees, endorsements, and certifications
