SCHOOL YEAR: 2025-2026

LOCATION: Career Enrichment Center & salon/school; to be decided by intern

WEEKLY HOURS - .5 COURSE CREDIT: No more than 10 hours per week. No more than 6 hours per day plus complete a self-reflection project and present it during the last week of the internship. Currently a 1-2 semester limit.

Session 1A:

● Monday in class @ CEC

● Tuesday & Thursday @ internship site

Session IC:

● Friday in class @ CEC

● Wednesday @ internship site

Session II:

● Monday, Thursday, Friday in class at CEC

● Tuesday & Wednesday @ internships site

Session III:

● Tuesday & Wednesday in class @ CEC

● Thursday @ internship site

HOURLY PAY: $15/hr stipend (No taxes withheld)

WHEN WORK HAPPENS: Monday through Friday 8:00AM - 3:00PM unless instructed differently by your SEL Teacher/Advisor/Mentor Contact Name above.

Summary of Position

Employers (Salons) receive highly motivated and well-qualified student interns with at least 2 years of coursework in the cosmetology program at CEC to work in their salon and help grow their business with the potential of gaining a new employee. It also affords current employees to gain supervisory skills, mentoring future cosmetologists.

Student interns will receive practical work experience in the cosmetology industry, meeting curriculum requirements, and being able to apply classroom learning to the workplace.

The Cosmetology Program benefits by building partnerships with local salons, and by developing further insight into current industry trends, techniques, equipment and products.

Exposure & Training provided through internship

  • Observing Customer Service/Learning
  • Sweeping, dusting, laundry, etc. (cleaning), folding towels
  • Answering the phone/scheduling clients, greeting clients
  • Assist with retail product display arrangements
  • Work alongside stylists as per New Mexico regulations
  • Help keep work areas neat and organized to promote a positive image. Use appropriate behavior in keeping with the mission, vision, and belief,s and in accordance with operating procedures and policies
  • Salons are encouraged to allow interns to work on models & mannequins as time permits using a kit provided by the CEC Cosmetology program or supplies at the salon/school


THIS DESCRIPTION DOES NOT LIST ALL DUTIES. INTERN MAY BE ASKED TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES BY THE STAFF OR SUPERVISOR. INTERN WILL BE EVALUATED ON PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECTS LISTED AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH EMPLOYEES AND CLIENTS. ON-SITE HOURS WILL BE NEGOTIATED WITH EACH CANDIDATE.

SAFETY EXPECTATIONS SHOULD BE REVIEWED WITH THE HOST/SALON.


Working and Physical Conditions/Onboarding Requirements (**vaccinations, etc,)

  • Interns will be required to complete travel permission documentation, including a valid driver's license & proof of insurance when transporting themselves to/from internship site
  • Interns will be required to wear appropriate, all black attire and close toe shoes during the duration of the internship along with their CEC photo ID.


Please speak to your SEL Teacher/Advisor/Mentor regarding working and physical conditions at your intern site. You will also be required to sign and upload W-9 and Parental Permission forms. In addition you will be required to electronically acknowledge Non-Disclosure and Internship agreements.

As part of your application, you will be expected to fill out your emergency contact information, school and other personal information as required by Albuquerque Public Schools Work-Based Learning programs and the New Mexico Public Education Department. Failure to do so or omission or erroneous information will result in your application to be rejected.
