Specialized Teacher - Visual Impairments
Job Description
Job DescriptionPosition Available: Vision Support Educator | 2025–2026 Academic Year
Employment Type: Full-Time | Start Date: August 2025
We’re looking for a passionate and skilled Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to join an inclusive educational team for the upcoming school year. This full-time, school-based role involves working with students across grade levels who have visual impairments, helping them overcome barriers to learning, build independence, and thrive academically and personally.
This role is ideal for an experienced, flexible educator with a strong background in delivering specialized instruction to students with visual needs. You’ll be instrumental in evaluating each student’s strengths and areas of need, developing accessible learning strategies, and collaborating with school staff to ensure all learners can fully engage with curriculum and classroom experiences.
As a TVI, your day-to-day responsibilities will include creating and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), offering direct instruction in Braille, assistive technology, and (if qualified) orientation and mobility. You will tailor instructional materials and techniques to fit students’ visual profiles and work in close partnership with classroom teachers, therapists, and families to support inclusive practices. You’ll also conduct evaluations such as Functional Vision Assessments (FVA) and Learning Media Assessments (LMA), track progress through data-informed practices, and maintain clear and compliant documentation. A key part of this position is maintaining consistent communication with caregivers and fostering a classroom environment that prioritizes growth, structure, and student independence.
Requirements
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with Visual Impairments endorsement.
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or Visual Impairments (Master’s degree preferred).
- Experience working with students with low vision, blindness, and additional disabilities is highly valued.
- Proficiency in Braille, assistive technology tools, large print materials, and accessible instructional techniques.
