K-8 Dean of Students
Mission of NCS
Our mission is to provide the children of NCS with new educational opportunities through a rigorous, comprehensive K-8 program that cultivates the intellectual, social, and emotional development of each child. Our students, who include autistic students and students with IEPs, will become independent learners and critical thinkers, will acquire the academic skills that they need to succeed in college preparatory high schools, and will exhibit the social and emotional skills that will allow them to reach their full potential.
The Opportunity
The Dean of Students operates in a proactive and responsive role in the school to meet the needs of struggling students and their teachers. They strive to have the greatest number of students possible in class, learning at all times. The Dean of Students coaches all staff on best practices pertaining to behavior systems in the school. They also monitor data and follow up with students and families when intervention is necessary. The Dean of Students is responsible for establishing a strong school culture in collaboration with the other leadership team members, as well as monitoring and action planning around the students' attendance in their assigned grades.
General Responsibilities
- Operate as ONE TEAM with all of NCS’s Leadership Staff
- Know, communicate, and manage school-wide culture systems
- Know proactive behavior systems in the school and monitor their use
- Know tiers of behavior and be able to categorize behaviors in the moment
- Understand logical consequences and restorative practices, and implement them appropriately to match the behavior
- Monitor and ensure the upkeep of all culture-related systems, including:
- Attendance
- Homework
- Positive incentives, consequences, etc.
Proactive Behavior Work
- Be a model of positive behavior management in the building.
- Be able to step into any classroom or space and ensure kids are on task and following directions.
- Work with other leaders to coach teachers on behavior management.
- Help to run the PBIS system.
Responsive Behavior Work
- Effectively respond to Tier 2 - Tier 3 behaviors.
- Actively address students who are in crisis, who may harm teachers, students, or themselves
- Monitor hallways and culture systems.
- Be CPI-trained and respond to the most urgent behavior of students in the building
- Generate behavior intervention plans that are effective and appropriately decrease target behaviors.
Family Communication
- Communicate with families as appropriate regarding positive accolades, consequences, incentives, suspensions, etc.
- Work with families to ensure they are getting students to school every day and on time.
- Collaborate to create the family newsletter with important updates as needed.
Social Emotional + Community Leadership
- Create a joyful campus full of events and opportunities for families to participate in.
- Rally scholars around demonstrating NCS values
- Organize and hold an awards assembly across campus, recognizing scholars who have successfully demonstrated the virtue.
School Duties
- Be a consistent leader, monitor, and positive force in upholding school-wide systems: arrival, bus, lunch, recess, and dismissal.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Proven effectiveness as a teacher with strong classroom management skills
- Possess an attitude that contributes to enhancing a positive school culture
- Strong data-analysis skills
- Organized and efficient
- Ability to consistently meet deadlines
- Model of consistent professionalism
- Ability to communicate effectively (written and oral)
- High capacity for problem-solving in ever-changing settings
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships across lines of difference
- Knowledge of best practices for students with disabilities, specifically autistic students (strongly preferred)
- Past work in an urban setting (preferred)
- Bilingual (preferred)
The starting salary for this position is $94,500
