Job Title: Crossing Guard (Part-Time or Substitute)

Reports To: Crossing Guard Supervisor
Status: Part Time, Non-Exempt (hourly)
Wage Scale: $16.14 - $21.98 (Typical starting wage $16.14 - $19.06, DOE)

Position Summary:
Responsible for ensuring the safe crossing of pedestrians, particularly schoolchildren, at designated crosswalks and intersections. This role involves directing traffic, maintaining order, and promoting road safety in collaboration with local authorities and the community. Observes pedestrian and vehicular traffic near assigned location to determine best timing for road crossings; Guides children and pedestrians into designated crossing locations; Escorts children and pedestrians as needed to assure safe crossings; Monitors behavior of children and educates children regarding traffic safety as appropriate; Count pedestrians as the assigned locations, as scheduled; Place safety cones and turn on school zone flashing lights as appropriate and on schedule; Observes general activity while on duty to detect suspicious behaviors; Reports such observations; May prepare various reports related to work time and work activities; Maintain a productive working environment which includes, but is not limited to, a spirit of cooperation with co-workers, peers, and the public; Demonstrates reliability in attendance, punctuality, and performance; Help with city sponsored events such as Heritage Days and the Public Safety Jamboree, and other duties as
assigned by the assigned Crossing Guard Supervisor, Police Sergeant, and/or the Police Chief.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: Traffic flows, rules, and regulations
Skilled in: Dealing effectively with children
Ability to: Enter roadway and stop flow of traffic; communicate instructions clearly and
effectively to students, parents, and drivers; consistently arrive on time and reliably fulfill
assigned responsibilities, ensuring a safe and orderly environment for students and pedestrians
during critical school crossing times.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, see, and walk for extended periods. Ability to lift and display in an upright position a handheld stop sign weighing between 5 to 10 pounds, repetitively, and for short periods of time.
Work Environment:
The noise level is usually loud (traffic noise). Work is performed in outdoor settings and in all weather conditions. Employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to inclement weather.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Sufficient education to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above and related duties
• Sufficient experience to demonstrate a working knowledge of practices and procedures associated with above duties.
• Must be 18 years of age or older
