Olive Support Services is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving the Antelope Valley community, including Palmdale and Lancaster. OSS brings subject matter expertise in diversity sensitivity and faith to ensure safe and therapeutic settings by requiring respect for diversity and inclusion.
OSS offers court-approved and evidence-based parenting classes, anger management, 52-week batterers’ classes, and life skills. Olive Support Services is a community-based organization, with a faith-based track of services, for individuals and families that are working on accomplishing their health goals.
Position Summary
The Tutor / Mentor is a part-time, in-person role that supports the academic and personal growth of youth, primarily those enrolled in our Transitional-Aged Youth (TAY) and other youth-serving programs. This role includes homework assistance during the school year and the facilitation of engaging enrichment activities when school is not in session. Enrichment of content may include STEAM projects, financial literacy, and soft skills development such as public speaking, interpersonal communication, and emotional well-being. This position requires a balance of strong academic skills and a passion for mentoring youth in a supportive and empowering environment.
Key Responsibilities

Academic Support: Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring across multiple subjects (especially math, science, and language arts) to help students succeed academically.

Enrichment Activities: Plan and facilitate enrichment sessions during school breaks or non-homework periods, focusing on hands-on learning and career-readiness skills.

Mentorship: Serve as a positive role model by promoting academic achievement, self-confidence, and personal development.

Data Tracking: Maintain accurate records of student attendance, participation, and progress. Submit timely reports to supervisors.

Communication: Maintain open lines of communication with students, caregivers (when applicable), and program staff to support student needs.

Collaboration: Partner with OSS team members to align tutoring and mentorship activities with broader program goals.
Qualifications

Education: Associate’s degree required; coursework in education, psychology, social work, or a related field is preferred.

Experience: Previous experience tutoring or working with youth in an educational or mentorship capacity is strongly preferred.

Academic Strengths: Strong knowledge of core academic subjects and the ability to adapt explanations to various learning styles.

Facilitation Skills: Ability to design and lead engaging enrichment activities that encourage critical thinking and creativity.

Interpersonal Skills: Patient, approachable, and committed to building trusting relationships with youth.

Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Technology: Comfortable with basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office or Google Workspace tools, for documentation and communication.
