Summary
The classroom assistant will assist the teacher in implementing appropriate strategies for working with the children, ages 2-5 years, who are blind or visually impaired. The instructional assistant will maintain a good working relationship with all VIPS team members and families, and other service providers serving in Kids Town Preschool.
Duties
Essential Duties: Include, but not limited to the following:
● Become knowledgeable of blindness/vision loss and their impact on a child’s development and growth.
● Help promote the developmental milestones for children who are blind/visually impaired.
● Help adapt materials and environments for students who are blind/visually impaired.
● Help collaborate with other professionals to assist in maintaining and completing appropriate
plans/goals.
● Assist with the documentation of student progress.
● Be a strong VIPS representative to parents/guardians, guests, teachers, therapists, student teachers,
and volunteers.
● Assist in daily preparation of materials and activities.
● Assist students in getting on/off school buses and walking to/from their classroom.
● Completes a health and wellness check of children upon arrival.
● Provide small group instruction under the supervision of the Lead Teacher
● Supervise students in small and/or large groups and in play activities.
● Assist with supervision of students during emergency drills and field trips.
● Assist students at mealtime/snack time with eating. Assisting may include feeding children by mouth or
via tube.
● Assist children in personal hygiene routines (i.e.: toileting, diapering, feeding, wiping noses, etc.).
● Have positive interactions with parents/guardians.
● Assist in maintaining all areas that are used by students in clean and safe environments as per licensing
and other regulated program procedures. (Classrooms, Kids Town, Playground, Sensory Room, etc.)
● Attend VIPS functions that pertain to this position.
● Attend all mandatory staff meetings.
● Participate in professional development training in order to obtain 15 hours of annual training as
required by licensing. Employees are responsible for maintaining current information in ECE-TRIS.
● Successfully complete and maintain (CPR/First Aid training and Medication Administration Training).
● Administers emergency medication and other medications, as needed.
● Responsible for documenting administration of medication, injuries to self or others, and tube
feedings.
● Maintains and keeps current all certifications.
● Report to the Preschool Director, Lead Teacher and/or Director of Education any suspicion of child
abuse and provide detailed documentation as needed for reporting.
● Demonstrate a willingness to perform other duties as assigned.
● Operate and care for equipment used at VIPS for instructional purposes.
Requirements
Physical Requirements:
● This work is performed while standing, walking, or sitting.
● Use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
● This work at times requires bending, squatting, crawling, reaching, with the ability to lift a child ages 2-5.
