POSITION: Director of Student Advising
REPORTS TO: Dean of Students
STATUS: Full-time, Exempt
RANGE: $100,000 – $110,000
Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is a distinguished, independent law school located in Downtown Brooklyn, New York. The Law School is searching for a Director of Student Advising to join our team and lead our efforts to advise all JD students on their academic programs. This position plays a critical leadership role in supporting the success of our students and will develop and execute programs to educate our students on their academic programs and the best path for each student as they pursue their JD degrees. The Director will oversee and enhance the academic advising program, providing guidance to students on academic planning, course selection, degree progression, and certificate offerings. This position is central to ensuring students receive high-quality, personalized support throughout their law school experience, while contributing to the development of a collaborative and inclusive learning environment. Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director of Student Advising will build deep, collaborative relationships with the Academic Success team, the Registrar, and Career Services, as well as other colleagues throughout the law school. Brooklyn Law School seeks an experienced and dedicated professional to serve in this role. Responsibilities include:
- Lead the academic advising program for JD students, ensuring it aligns with the institution's mission, goals, and best practices in legal education.
- Collaborate with faculty, administrators, and student services to continuously improve advising services, policies, and practices.
- Provide individualized academic advising to a diverse student body, helping students navigate course selection, degree requirements, and academic challenges.
- Serve as a resource for students seeking guidance on academic progression, balancing work/life demands, and other matters impacting their academic performance.
- Develop and implement initiatives aimed at improving academic advising outcomes, including workshops, seminars, and one-on-one consultations.
- Coordinate with faculty and staff to ensure that academic advising integrates effectively with other student support services, such as career counseling, wellness, and student organizations.
- Collect and analyze feedback from students and faculty to assess the effectiveness of the advising program and identify areas for improvement.
- Maintain and ensure adherence to academic policies, including requirements for graduation, academic supervision, and leave of absence.
- Stay current with trends and best practices in academic advising in law schools and legal education and incorporate these insights into advising practices.
- Develop and implement strategies to support student retention and partner with the academic success team, particularly to serve students facing academic difficulties or those at risk of failing.
- Work closely with colleagues in Student Affairs and other stakeholders to address issues related to student well-being, academic concerns, and personal development.
- Serve as a liaison between students, faculty, and administration to foster communication and facilitate the academic advising process.
- Engage with faculty and administrators to identify and address academic challenges affecting students and ensure that students have the necessary resources and support.
- In collaboration with the Dean of Students, advise the SAMP program to ensure delivery of services to first year students.
Required:
- A JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school
- Knowledge of NY Court of Appeals requirements to sit for the NY Bar Examination
- Knowledge of ABA Standards for legal education
- Excellent judgement, analytical and oral/written communication skills
- Critical thinking skills, including an ability to solve difficult problems and balance competing interests
- Effective conflict resolution skills and an ability to maintain neutrality
- Emotional intelligence and an ability to listen carefully and react with sensitivity and compassion
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage complex student cases and resolve conflicts effectively.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- A passion for student success, academic excellence, and promoting diversity and inclusion in legal education.
- In-depth knowledge of academic advising best practices and legal education curricula.
- Strong understanding of the unique challenges faced by law students, including academic pressures, professional development, and wellness.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Ability to provide mentorship and guidance, including to students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Preferred:
- Experience working in legal education, specifically in an advising context
- Familiarity with issues related to student mental health and wellness, and a commitment to supporting students’ well-being.
Work environment
- The role requires regular interaction with students, faculty, staff, and other administrative departments, fostering a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere.
- The work will primarily be conducted in an office setting with occasional responsibilities in other areas of the campus, such as student residences, event spaces, and meeting rooms.
Remote capabilities
- The Director of Academic Advising position is a student facing role which requires presence on campus, in person a minimum of four (4) days per week.
- Remote work may be available one (1) day per week, pursuant to an approved hybrid work agreement, and keeping in mind that the essential functions of role require in person presence on campus.
Physical demands
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer

- Some travel may be required.
