TITLE: Academic Tutor

REPORTS TO: Youth Build Program Site Coordinator & Case Manager
STATUS: o Full time - Hourly o Full time - Salary ü Part Time - Hourly
CLASIFICATION (FLSA): o Exempt ü Non-Exempt
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Collaborates on teaching the participants in the Educational Program by offering tutoring in the subjects of mathematics, Spanish, and English, verifying assignments, and providing and correcting practice exercises.
TASKS AND DETAILED WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Daily reinforcement of academic skills, such as mathematics, Spanish, and English, in students with academic lag.
- Provide and correct practice exercises for different school skills.
- Provide specialized tutoring as needed.
- Participate and collaborate in the activities organized within the program.
- Support other club programs.
- Keep track of the "Power Points" points accumulated by the participants.
- Keeps participant records organized and up-to-date.
- Note in the records any comments relevant to the participant's academic achievement.
- Be a positive example at all times through their actions, inside and outside the Club.
- Perform any other task requested by the supervisor.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- University student (preferably in Education) with studies leading to a Bachelor's degree; 60 college credits, 15 credits in education.
- One (1) year of experience providing tutoring.
- English Language — Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- Education and Training — Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
- Training and Teaching Others — identifying the educational needs of others, developing formal educational or training programs or classes, and teaching or instructing others.
- Customer and Personal Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Active listening — Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
- Learning Strategies — Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things. Knowledge in the theory of multiple intelligences and learning styles.
- Active Learning — Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
- Critical Thinking — using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
- Thinking Creatively — Developing, designing, or creating new applications, ideas, relationships, systems, or products, including artistic contributions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Individuals may need to sit or stand as needed. The position may require walking primarily on a level surface for periodic periods throughout the day. May reach above shoulder height or below the waist and lift as required to file documents or store materials throughout the workday must be able to lift 15 pounds and use proper lifting techniques.
- Standing or sitting and speaking or listening are regularly required. Ability to use common office equipment such as computers, facsimiles, printers, calculators, etc. You are frequently required to drive motor vehicles.
