Position: 6th - 7th Grade History Substitute Teacher

Assignment Dates: 08/2025-11/2025

Reports to: Director of Upper School

Position Status: Full-Time Temporary, Exempt

Summary:

The 6th-7th grade History Substitute Teacher is an experienced history teacher with the subject skills and passion for history necessary to inspire a love of learning in students, and will possess a solid understanding of the connection between students academic progress and their social emotional development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach to the whole child and prioritize relationships with students
  • Demonstrate knowledge and a practice of fostering social emotional health in middle school students
  • Teach writing well and maintain a strong emphasis on writing (i.e. very limited fill-in or short answers) as an important feature of the 6th and 7th grade history curricula
  • Integrate technology into the student learning experience
  • Plan and teach three sections of 6th grade history, ancient civilizations, and one section of 7th grade world history and incorporate the following elements:
    • Critical thinking:
      • To think analytically about historical events; how are they connected?
      • Ask why is a historical topic important; what is its impact?
    • Expository writing skills:
      • To focus on writing 3-5 paragraph essays based on his/her viewpoint
      • To write papers supporting a developed thesis statement/question
    • Public speaking:
      • Be confident and effective in presentations
      • Articulate his/her point of view in class discussions
    • Geography:
      • To identify all the major countries of the world
    • Provide individual student support during study hall and outside of class hours, as needed
    • Serve as an advisor to approximately 10 students for daily check-ins, attendance and weekly implementation of advisory curriculum
    • Collaborate closely with colleagues and the division administrators
    • Prompt and proactive communication with parents
    • Serve as a middle school advisor
    • Chaperone outdoor education trips
    • Supervise drop-off/pick-up, recesses, etc.
    • Participate in admissions-related events
    • Conduct parent conferences as needed throughout the year

The ideal candidate will have the following educational and work background:

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited institution in a humanities-related subject, preferably history
  • Postgraduate degree from an accredited institution is preferred but not required
  • A minimum of 3 years of classroom teaching experience
  • Working knowledge of Google Classroom, Zoom, and online learning websites and applications

  • Familiarity with authentic assessment practices and current technology



Salary Range:

$2,500-$3,000 semi-monthly
