Position Title: AMP Up Intern

Hours: Part-time internship, approximately 18 hours per week. This is a hybrid opportunity with at least one in-person day per week, preferably Tuesdays. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required. We are happy to be flexible based on your school schedule.

Program Overview and Mission:

Advancement Mobility Program (AMP Up Boston) is designed as a 3-year supportive program to assist over 250 Boston Housing and Cambridge Housing residents in reaching their goals in education, career mobility, and economic independence. The program combines participant-driven supportive services, peer learning, and cash incentives to help families achieve success. AMP Up Boston is also a research study in partnership with Harvard and MIT. The study will help EMPath better understand how our mentoring approach support participants with achieving economic self-sufficiency.

What You’ll Learn:

As an AMP Up Intern you will have the opportunity to join a passionate and energetic team who cares deeply about helping families reach their career and educational goals. This internship offers students the opportunity to apply and build skills relevant to human services, including:

  • Practicing motivational interviewing skills, active listening, and trauma sensitive communication.
  • Assessing participant needs and strengths.
  • Understanding the differences between case manager support and coaching services
  • Participating in training and workshops focused on economic mobility, trauma informed coaching, and EMPath’s Mobility Mentoring model
  • Exploring best practices in fostering participant engagement in one-to-one interactions and group settings.
  • Enter important data and assessments in a Social Service database called Apricot.
  • Utilize human service data to improve service delivery and program operations.
  • Developing professional skills with AMP Up colleagues in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outreach to participants who are having a difficult time engaging with the program, provide support and utilize problem solving skills to encourage program participation
  • Co-develop engagement strategies such as events, workshops and media to improve program retention. Create meaningful opportunities for participants to engage with each other and foster community.
  • Research relevant resources and make community relationships that can impact the success of the participants
  • Enter and track data on a regular basis for internal and external research.
  • Participate and engage in Team Meetings and take notes
  • (if appropriate) Facilitate exit assessments for participants.



Possible additional responsibilities (Based on the readiness and availability of the student)

  • Provide mentoring services to adults across different lifespans and socio-economic backgrounds using a holistic approach called Mobility Mentoring.
  • Engage in regular and consistent follow-up with participants.
  • Practice coaching strategies to help participants work towards their goals.

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in Social Work, Human Services or related field
  • Cultural competency and sensitivity with groups and individuals representing a variety of needs, abilities, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with partners, colleagues, and participants
  • Ability to respond flexibly to a fluid and evolving program environment.
  • Strong time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent computer skills, including data entry.
  • Passion and interest in working with low-income families.

This project will allow interns to apply their skills, build a portfolio of tangible work, and gain real-world experience in human services and nonprofit operations.

Eligible students may earn college credit through their academic institution. In addition, interns who successfully complete this internship will receive a personalized letter of recommendation highlighting their contributions and growth during the internship.
