Position Summary: The Director of Special Education is responsible for assisting the Sr. VP of Education with the operation of the Day School Program. As the Committee on Special Education Chairperson, the Director of Special Education ensures that special education students receive the highest quality services in compliance with New York State Education Department mandates and standards. The Director of Special Education promotes a multi-disciplinary approach to education and treatment and ensures that the integration of all services meets the individual needs of the students through holistic planning and implementation.
Responsibilities:
- Role model and promote the standards of a high performing team member and ensure that supervisees are accountable to performing to the same standard.
- Complete required Agency and New York State Education reports and documentation in a timely manner meeting all standards of content and professional presentation.
- Ensure that Agency standards of practice as well as State and Federal Education standards are fully met, and to exceed those standards wherever possible and practical.
- Chair the Committee of Special Education (CSE) and work collaboratively with school district CSE Chairpersons
- Act as the liaison for related services providers and ensure the delivery of quality services that meet the needs of students as outlined in their Individual Education Plan.
- Receive and review all referrals for Day School and Day Treatment as well as schedule and conduct screenings to determine if the referral meets criteria for acceptance.
- Through effective staff selection, staff development and training, supervision and evaluation of staff ensure that staff are competent, working to achieve their professional objectives, and striving to meet program goals
Requirements
Education:
- Master's Degree in Education required
- Master's Degree in Special Education or School Psychology preferred
- New York state Certification in Educational Leadership preferred
Experience:
- 8 years of teaching experience, 8 years of experience as a school psychologist, preferably 3 years in special education
- 2 years as a committee of special education chairperson can subsitute for some of the above experience
- A combination of the above experiences, or a variation thereof is required
- Driver's License and ability to maintain insurability throughout employment required
