Position Overview
Gaston County Schools is seeking a compassionate, licensed, and dependable Full-Time School Nurse to serve in an itinerant capacity across multiple schools in the district. This vital position plays a central role in promoting student wellness, managing chronic conditions, and ensuring safe and healthy learning environments.
This is an ideal opportunity for a Registered Nurse (RN) who thrives on variety, collaboration, and serving diverse student populations. The role begins with district-wide orientation on August 4, 2025 and will follow the traditional school-year calendar.
Key Responsibilities

Travel between multiple assigned schools to provide direct nursing care, health screenings, and support to K12 students

Respond to student illnesses and emergencies, administer medications and treatments per physician orders

Create and maintain individualized health care plans (IHPs) for students with chronic or complex medical conditions

Collaborate with IEP/504 teams as the health services representative and provide input based on medical needs

Conduct health assessments, manage immunization compliance, and assist with communicable disease protocols

Train and consult with school staff on first aid, emergency procedures, and student-specific health needs

Document all care and communication in compliance with district policy and HIPAA regulations

Coordinate with local health departments, families, and medical professionals as needed

Maintain and monitor health office supplies, records, and safety equipment across assigned campuses

Promote health education and wellness initiatives district-wide
Required Qualifications
-
Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina (unrestricted)

CPR and First Aid certification (current or renewable prior to start date)

Valid drivers license and reliable transportation to travel between school sites

Strong organizational and documentation skills

Ability to work independently across varied school environments

Excellent communication skills with students, families, and staff
Preferred Qualifications
-
Prior experience as a school nurse or in pediatric/community health settings

Familiarity with IEP and 504 Plan processes

Experience with chronic disease management in school-aged children

Working knowledge of FERPA, HIPAA, and state public health guidelines
Schedule & Compensation
-
Full-Time (approx. 7.5 hours/day, MF) following the school calendar

Orientation Date: August 4, 2025 (required attendance)

Weekly compensation based on RN licensure and experience
