ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBJECTIVES:
The Academic Advisor for Student Athletes serves as the point of contact for student-athletes and designated academic support programs. This includes, but is not limited to, academic advising, academic mentoring, monitoring compliance with academic eligibility requirements, early intervention for at-risk behaviors, and coordinating support services to help each student succeed based on individual needs, goals, and risk factors. The advisor supports instructors working with student-athletes by sharing information and updates on students and addressing behavioral and academic concerns in a timely manner. Ongoing communication is maintained to assist students with registration, advising, scheduling, and referrals as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain knowledge of programs and strategic plans within the Department of Athletics designed to assure the academic integrity of the athletics program and promote student-athlete welfare.
- Maintain knowledge of institutional, conference, and NJCAA/NCAA requirements related to academic eligibility, financial aid, and intercollegiate competition.
- Communicate with new student-athletes before each semester to ensure understanding of enrollment and academic eligibility requirements and clarify expectations.
- Participate in the planning and delivery of academic orientation sessions for all students (including student-athletes) and their families each semester.
- Assist student-athletes in their transition to college through one-on-one and group advising.
- Monitor academic progress of assigned student-athletes; identify barriers and help create action plans to address challenges and connect students to academic support services as needed.
- Provide one-on-one or group academic coaching and intervene when performance concerns arise.
- Monitor student-athletes’ compliance with academic eligibility criteria and inform appropriate stakeholders of consequences or interventions when necessary.
- Regularly evaluate academic advising and support practices, gather stakeholder feedback, and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Collaborate in determining student-athlete eligibility for continued participation based on academic progress and compliance and encourage continued enrollment and degree completion for student-athletes who are no longer participating in sports.
- Collaborate with SSC team and academics to develop and apply individualized strategies for student-athlete success.
- Promote and facilitate positive relationships between faculty and student-athletes, and among student-athletes.
- Monitor and respond to early alert systems for identifying student-athletes who need support and facilitate timely interventions.
- Assist the Student Success team with retention initiatives, including analyzing retention data specific to student-athletes.
- Facilitate College 101 sessions as required.
- Serve on various college committees as assigned.
- Work during high-impact academic periods including but not limited to: annual forum, graduation, orientations, the week before the semester begins, the first and last two weeks of the semester, and advising periods.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Ability to collaborate with coaches and instructors to support student-athlete academic success.
- Skill in promoting healthy, productive relationships among faculty and student-athletes.
EDUCATION:
Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Education, Counseling, or a related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of five years’ experience working with at-risk student populations.
