The Academy Charter School offers a creative art curriculum in an environment where students are highly motivated in acquiring new skills. The academic program focuses on preparing students to use the acquired skills in the real world – college, work and beyond. The Academy employs caring and committed staffs who promotes excellence in the classroom to ensure that students can achieve at high levels.


Position Overview

The Academy Charter School Dean of School Culture understands and promotes the school’s mission, vision, objectives, and policies both within and outside the immediate school community. The Dean will demonstrate the qualities expected of all academy teachers in the areas of curriculum, instruction, assessment, classroom management, professional responsibilities, professional relationships, family involvement, and school community.


Responsibilities & Duties


Instructional Planning

  • Assists students in establishing high standards of conduct
  • Properly addresses the improvement of student attendance and discipline
  • Reports illegal acts to the proper authorities
  • Coordinates with other deans to ensure coverage at all school events at which coverage is necessary.
  • Confers with students and parents on security matters
  • Coordinates with outside organizations and agencies
  • Assists in developing and administering practices dealing with campus control and security
  • Patrols buildings and grounds

Student Assessment

  • Investigates student complaints and grievances.
  • Interviews students and witnesses in disciplinary investigations
  • Investigate, adjudicate, and monitor minor infractions of the school code in the form of
  • progressive discipline such as detentions, classroom referrals, Saturday detention, and in-school
  • suspension
  • Suspends students from school in accordance with Board policy and state law
  • Re-enters students upon completion of out-of-school suspensions, facilitates student/teacher reentry
  • meetings, and provides Peer Mediation to resolve student conflicts
  • Maintains disciplinary records required by policy, regulation, law or good practice
  • Presents the school’s case in due process proceedings for suspension and expulsion
  • Provide ongoing and timely feedback to students on their progress towards meeting expectations and achieving goals
  • Completes all reports in a timely manner

Learning Environment

  • Create, and manage a responsive learning environment that enables students to feel safe, to be creative, and to develop to their full potential
  • Establish, model, practice and reinforce age-appropriate rules and discipline using school approved procedures; create and consistently use individual behavioral management plans as needed
  • Ensure smooth operation of all classroom instructional functions without exceptions

Student and Extracurricular Activities

  • Create a sense of community and belonging for the students in their school
  • Establish connections and relationships among their students and the larger community that support the academic and social development of the student and contribute to achievement of overall school goals

Student Support & School Culture

  • Communicates with parents and teachers on student attendance.
  • Investigates attendance issues
  • Assigns students appropriate consequences for truancy
  • Decides if absences are excusable under state law and board policy
  • Advises students and parents on ways to improve attendance
  • Oversees student attendance record to ensure all absences are adjudicated
  • Compares information or data with other records for verification
  • Communicate effectively and maintain strong relationships with students, families, colleagues and administrators
  • Establish, involve, and assist students in the development, maintenance, and evaluation of portfolios
  • Oversee and assist with student arrival / dismissal
  • Work closely with all members of school community modeling citizenship, collaboration and support of one another
  • Counsels' individual students and, when necessary, works with administration to make appropriate referrals for testing, guidance or psychological counseling
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Administration


Pay Transparency: The salary range for this role is $62,500 - $97,500. Base pay offered may vary within the posted range based on several factors, including but not limited to education, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.

Requirements:

Academic & certification qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred

Work experience & skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of urban teaching experience required
  • Experience working with at-risk student population in some capacity preferred
  • Educational experience after college (fellowships, summer study, or graduate course work to pursue greater depth in a subject area, specific instructional methodology, curriculum development, special education, technology, etc.) preferred
  • Working knowledge and comfort level with instructional technology
  • Strong written, grammatical, presentation, and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required to develop rubrics, examine data and metrics that will enhance student knowledge and promote performance of superior work products
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with a diverse team of teachers and administrators
  • Knowledge of childhood development and demonstrated experience with executing planned lessons to meet the differential needs of each child
