Position SummaryThe Dean of Students is a key member of the pastoral team, responsible for ensuring that Vertex maintains a safe, structured, and mission-aligned school environment. This role focuses on upholding school-wide norms, managing discipline systems, and cultivating the habits of character that prepare students to live lives guided by courage, justice, temperance, and wisdom.We believe that clear expectations, consistently upheld, create a school environment that is safe, predictable, and responsive — conditions essential not only for academic excellence, but for the full flourishing of each student.Key ResponsibilitiesSchool Culture & Discipline
- Maintain a calm, orderly, and mission-aligned school environment across all shared spaces.
- Enforce school-wide systems and expectations around attendance, punctuality, uniform, behavior, and preparedness.
- Respond decisively to behavioral issues using consistent, transparent procedures and consequences.
- Track and analyze behavior data to inform student interventions and school-wide improvements.
- Lead daily supervision during transitions, lunch, arrival, and dismissal to reinforce expectations and build relationships.
Student Development & Character Formation
- Support students in cultivating habits of self-discipline, responsibility, and virtue.
- Help implement advisory and character programming aligned with the school’s four cardinal virtues.
- Lead reentry planning and accountability processes for students returning from suspension or crisis.
- Collaborate with the counseling and student support teams to develop individualized support plans when needed.
Family Engagement
- Maintain regular, proactive communication with families regarding student conduct and growth.
- Lead family meetings and conferences to address behavior concerns and reinforce shared expectations.
Build strong, respectful relationships with families, especially during moments of conflict or challenge.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
- Partner with school leadership to shape a strong, cohesive, and values-aligned school culture.
- Provide direct support to new teachers and staff in building consistency and clarity around school norms.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree
- 3+ years of experience in urban schools, with a track record of success in student culture or discipline
- Proven ability to manage systems, lead with clarity, and hold students to high standards
- Calm, confident presence in challenging situations
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Deep alignment with Vertex’s mission and belief in the formative power of structure, consistency, and virtue
- Experience in a classical, IB, or virtue-based school setting (preferred)
- Spanish proficiency (preferred)
- Familiarity with MTSS frameworks or student support systems (preferred)
Compensation and Benefits
Vertex Partnership Academies offers a competitive compensation package, including:
- The salary range for this position is $90,000 - $100,000; offer will be commensurate with the candidate’s years of experience and credentials.

Physical Requirements
This role may require lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted, including assisting coworkers when needed. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, sitting, and looking at a computer screen for long periods at a time.
