Early Head Start Family Educator

1 FTE (40 hours/week)

SUMMARY The Early Head Start Home Visitor plans and directs the educational and related activities for families in the EHS Home Based Program, works closely with parents and other program staff and performs related duties as required.

Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Plan and direct Home-Based individualized Family/Child educational curricula with meaningful educational opportunities for infants and toddlers and related activities.
  • Complete Developmental Screenings and Assessments on assigned children. Review each child’s progress with parents.
  • Use child assessment information and observations to guide parents in planning and implementing home visit activities and follow-up home activities.
  • Carry a minimum caseload of ten families. Visit each home weekly for a minimum of one and one-half hours each week throughout the program year.
  • Plan and conduct two group socializations each month.
  • Familiarize families with all components of the Early Head Start Program.
  • Maintain open communication with parents and program staff to ensure complete services for each child.
  • Maintain open communication with Outreach Coordinators to insure delivery of appropriate social services to families.
  • Attend Agency and Head Start meetings/trainings, interagency meetings and community events as assigned.
  • Maintain up-to-date activity sheets and home visit reports.
  • Submit monthly reports in an accurate and timely manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

To be considered for the Family Educator position, one must obtain an Associate, Bachelor or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education, or a degree in a related field with experience in Early Childhood Education, or a State awarded Infant/Toddler certificate.

Knowledge of:

  • Home Based individualized Family/Child educational curricula methods for infants and toddlers.
  • Approved Assessment and testing methods.
  • Local community resources and regional community services programs.
  • Principles of record keeping and records management.
  • Personal computers utilizing standard software.
  • Safety rules and regulations.

Skill in:

  • Maintaining order when engaging parents and children, while expressing warmth and friendliness.
  • Maintaining composure and working effectively within a home setting.
  • Communicating effectively with children.
  • Following verbal and written instructions.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Minnesota State Driver’s License, proof of insurance and review of Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) report is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. Mobility to drive a motor vehicle in order to attend meetings. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.
