Job DescriptionSalary: A pay range for new hires in this position is $22.10 to $24 per hour. Offers are made within this range based on competencies, experience, and internal equity.

Experiential Learning Specialist
Part-time - 18 hours

Schedule

  • Thursdays 3-9 pm
  • Fridays 3-9 pm
  • Saturdays 12-6 pm


Under the supervision of the Experiential Learning Supervisor, assists library patrons by providing mentorship and support in hands-on learning spaces and facilitating learning experiences. The primary audiences served are adults, teens, and families in the Studio (makerspace).

Minimum Qualifications:
(education, experience, and certifications):

  • Some college coursework, an associate degree, or equivalent experience
  • Experience providing direct customer service to adults, teens, and families, or relevant work experience

  • Excellent communication, both written and verbal, and social skills
  • Broad cultural competency knowledge and skills, and ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse workforce and community

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree
  • Experience working in a public library, STEAM learning environment, and/or makerspace

Preferred Competencies:

  • Multilingual skills in English plus another language(s) relevant to the Skokie community
  • Knowledge of and comfort with maker-related technologies, projects, software, and systems (e.g., sewing and embroidery, 3D printing, vinyl and paper cutting, laser cutting and engraving, digital media creation)

Essential Functions:

  • Contribute to public service in the library in Experiential Learning areas, including the Studio
  • Provide drop-in assistance and service with multiple devices, equipment, software, and activities related to maker, technology, and STEAM topics
  • Proactively assist patrons in the use of the library and its materials including helping them to identify, locate, and begin activities appropriate to their interests
  • Explain, demonstrate, assist, and instruct patrons in the use of library resources, such as featured activities, library equipment, and related software
  • Engage, interact, and build relationships with patrons
  • Reserve study rooms and register patrons for library classes and programs
  • Assist with keeping the experiential learning spaces welcoming and engaging, including developing passive programs, displays, and activities
  • Maintain tidiness of public spaces, including checking equipment and furniture daily for general working order
  • Troubleshoot minor problems with equipment and software
  • Ensure that library policies and procedures are consistently followed
  • Report problemscomputer, equipment, or behavioralto the supervisor, Safety team, librarian in charge, or other appropriate staff
  • Execute opening and closing procedures
  • Contribute to the effective merchandising of materials
  • Promote library services to patrons
  • Contribute to, implement, promote, and evaluate active and passive experiential learning activities
  • Provide instruction in the use of resources both 1:1 and to groups
  • Participate in other library programming efforts, including out in the community
  • Contribute to information aids and tools such as how-tos, information guides, activities sheets, and other materials that promote and engage patrons with library experiential learning opportunities
  • Provide courteous customer service in library spaces and at library events
  • Maintain knowledge about library programs and services, and assist with promotion of library services and collections
  • Support public service projects and initiatives
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities
  • Maintain current knowledge of library and other relevant fields such as emerging technologies
  • Complete projects assigned by supervisor
  • Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance

  • Ability to perform office-related functions including extended concentration on a computer, and typing capability
  • Work may include prolonged sitting, standing, stooping, bending, lifting/moving materials, getting down on the floor, as well as near constant computer use.
  • Manual dexterity, clear speech, hearing acuity, and correctable vision needed
  • Noise level is generally moderate
  • Scheduling may require availability during any library operating hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and occasionally when the library is closed. Although a weekly schedule is established, the needs of the library may require scheduling changes and flexibility.
  • Employee required to park in designated area
