Job Description
Position Summary
Venatore is a leader in delivering comprehensive IT solutions and the accompanying documentation that ensures long-term success. We are seeking a Technical Writer III to support the FTEL SCIF Network MLS implementation project by developing and managing all project documentation and training materials. As a senior Technical Writer, you will work on-site at Edwards Air Force Base, embedded with the project team, to capture technical details and translate them into clear, formal documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences. This includes system design documents, user manuals, security documentation, test reports, and training guides for a complex multi-level secure network system. This is a short-term, project-based position on-site at Edwards AFB requiring an active TS/SCI clearance.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed documentation, training materials, and reports for the MLS network implementation project, ensuring all technical aspects of the system are accurately documented and accessible.
- Develop and write the System Design Document (SDD) in collaboration with engineers, capturing the system architecture, network design, hardware/software components, and configuration details. Ensure the SDD and other design documents meet any required Department of Defense formatting or Data Item Description (DID) standards.
- Create end-user and administrator guides/manuals for the Trusted Thin Client system and associated network components, explaining how to operate and maintain the system in the FTEL SCIF. Include step-by-step procedures, illustrations (as needed), and safety/security notes.
- Produce training materials such as slide decks, handouts, and reference sheets to support on-site training sessions for Edwards AFB personnel. Coordinate with the engineering and IA teams to incorporate relevant operational and security content into the training curriculum.
- Document project meetings and activities: record meeting minutes, capture action items, and maintain decision logs. Regularly update status reports and project communication documents to reflect progress, issues, and resolutions throughout the project lifecycle.
- Assist the cybersecurity team in writing and editing security accreditation documents (e.g., contributing to the SSP, SCTM, test plans, etc.), ensuring clarity and consistency in how technical information (like system configurations and security controls) is presented.
- Ensure all project documentation is clear, concise, and free of errors. This includes proofreading and editing for grammar, technical accuracy, and compliance with any applicable guidelines or classification marking requirements.
- Manage document version control and configuration management for deliverables – track revisions, coordinate reviews and approvals of documents (such as design review out-briefs, test reports, and final project reports), and prepare the final documentation package for project closeout and customer hand-off.
Qualifications
- Active TS/SCI security clearance is required (you will be working with and documenting classified system details).
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Writing, Communications, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a technical writer (or technical documentation specialist) in an IT, engineering, or defense project environment. Demonstrated experience producing a variety of document types including design documents, user manuals, and training materials.
- Exceptional written communication and editing skills, with the ability to comprehend complex technical information and present it clearly to various audiences. Must have a keen attention to detail for proofreading and document consistency.
- Familiarity with IT and network terminology; ability to work closely with engineers and subject matter experts to extract necessary information. Experience with projects involving networking or cybersecurity is a strong plus.
- Proficiency in documentation tools and software, such as Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Visio) and PDF editing tools. Ability to create basic diagrams or workflows to include in documentation.
- Knowledge of DoD documentation standards or military writing conventions is beneficial (e.g., experience with DoD Data Item Descriptions, or formatting requirements for technical manuals).
- Strong organizational and time-management skills – capable of juggling multiple documents and deadlines, and adjusting to changes in project scope or schedule.
- Ability to work on-site in a collaborative environment, participating in meetings and discussions with the project team to stay current on project developments that need to be documented. Must handle sensitive information with discretion and adhere to all security protocols for handling classified material.
