Job Description
The School-based Therapeutic Day Treatment (TDT) Counselor provides individualized and structured therapeutic interventions to children/adolescents with mental, emotional, or behavioral illnesses in a school setting. A criminal background check isrequired for this position, along with a search of the Virginia Department of Social Services/Child Protective Services Central Registry.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide a minimum of two therapeutic and/or behavior management interventions per day to at-risk youth based on the goals and objectives listed in their service plan. Interventions may include daily evaluation of needs, medication education and management, opportunities to learn and use daily living skills and to enhance social and interpersonal skills (e.g., problem-solving, anger management, community responsibility, increased impulse control, appropriate peer relations, etc.)
- Manage a caseload of clients with mental and/or behavioral health diagnoses in a school setting
- Provide care coordination by maintaining contact with client's parents, teachers, other service providers, etc.
- Develop person-centered treatment plans by working alongside youth to identify goals and potential barriers to treatment
- Maintain detailed and timely daily progress notes, individualized service plans, and quarterly reports on agency's electronic record keeping platform
- Model appropriate behaviors and strategies for the client throughout the day
Required Licenses/Certifications:
- QMHP Certification
- CPR/First Aid
- TOVA

While performing the duties of this job, there must be an ability to perform a range of motions, including but not limited to, sitting for long periods of time, standing, walking, climbing/descending stairs and driving for periods exceeding one hour. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee will be working primarily indoors and in a school environment. Requires maintaining appropriate dress and conduct consistent with a school setting. The employee will be required to complete a tuberculosis screening upon hire.
