Position Title: Teacher in a mixed-aged class of 3 and 4-year-olds with 12 students and an assistant at Total Child in Evanston - start 8/18/25 (potential to start in June 2025 if available).

Job Overview: Total Child Preschool, Childcare, & Kindergarten is a Reggio-Inspired play-based preschool with daycare hours located in downtown Evanston, close to public transportation. Your hours would be 7:30-4 with a one-hour break, and separate planning times. The three/four-year-old class teacher is responsible for creating a nurturing and stimulating play-based learning environment for preschool children to facilitate their academic, social, and emotional development. The teacher should employ effective teaching strategies and activities that promote a love for learning and exploration in a Reggio-Emilia style. Familiarity with the Reggio-Inspired approach is preferred. The position is full-time year-round, but the summer portion is primarily play-based outdoor camp activities. The teacher will work as part of a supportive and friendly teaching team with one assistant teacher in a mixed-age class with 12 students, ages 3 and 4.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Planning and Implementation:

    • Develop and implement play-based and age-appropriate lesson plans and activities based on the children’s interests using the Reggio Emilia-inspired approach.

    • Use multiple forms of intelligence to guide curriculum planning that aligns with state standards.

    • Foster a holistic approach to education, incorporating academic, social, and emotional development.

  • Classroom Management:

    • Create a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere that encourages active participation and engagement.

    • Establish and enforce classroom rules and behavioral expectations, ensuring a safe and respectful environment.

  • Individualized Instruction:

    • Recognize and accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities within the classroom.

    • Provide individualized support and challenges to students as needed.

  • Assessment and Evaluation:

    • Assess students' progress through various methods, including observations, assessments, and evaluations.

    • Keep accurate records of students' academic and behavioral performance, including a yearly portfolio.

  • Parent Communication:

    • Maintain open and regular communication with parents or guardians regarding students' progress, activities, and any concerns.

    • Conduct parent-teacher conferences twice annually.

  • Collaboration:

    • Work collaboratively with the three-year-old assistant teachers and school staff to ensure a cohesive and effective educational experience.

    • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay updated on educational trends and best practices.

    • Open to feedback and professional development.

  • Classroom Environment:

    • Create an inviting and stimulating classroom environment with age-appropriate materials and resources.

    • Foster a love for learning by incorporating hands-on activities, games, and creative projects.

  • Crisis Management:

    • Be prepared to handle emergencies or unexpected situations, ensuring the safety and well-being of students.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience teaching in a preschool setting.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in teaching Early Childhood Education or a related teaching degree.

  • Prefer experience in a Reggio Emilia-inspired school.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Benefits:

  • The teacher’s hours are 7:30 am - 4:00 pm Monday - Friday, year round.

  • Total Child is closed for one week for Thanksgiving Break, two weeks for Winter Break, one week for Spring Break, and one week for Summer Break, in addition to most federal holidays.

  • All staff have 4 weeks (20 days) of additional paid time off per program year.
