Job DescriptionMinimum 1+ years visually impaired experience required.

This position supports students with visual impairments by providing alternative media materials in accessible formats such as braille, large print, and electronic versions. The role involves working closely with teachers of students with vision impairments (TSVI) to ensure that learning materials meet the needs of each student.

Location: Various school sites within the district, Kent, WA
Employment Type: Contract, up to 1.0 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE), 37.5 hours/week with unpaid meal break for shifts over 5 hours; part-time applicants (0.5 FTE) will also be considered
Contract Duration: Immediate start through June 21, 2024, aligned with the school calendar

Key Responsibilities:

  • Transcribe educational materials, including textbooks, workbooks, tests, tactile maps, and graphs, into braille or other accessible formats
  • Maintain accurate records and properly labeled electronic files for all transcribed materials for future use
  • Deliver materials promptly to ensure availability when needed by students
  • Collaborate with TSVI to adapt materials suitably for each student's vision impairment
  • Stay up to date with technologies related to braille production and braille assistive technology
  • Order and manage an inventory of necessary supplies
  • Maintain a resource file to locate alternative sources of accessible materials
  • Ensure all materials use correct English spelling, grammar, and punctuation

Qualifications:

  • Valid Washington State teaching license and certification for the visually impaired
  • Ability and willingness to work onsite in person across various district schools
  • Fingerprints on file with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) prior to start
  • Demonstrated understanding or ability to learn braille transcription and production
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
