Responsibilities
The College Advisor plays a critical role in supporting students post-secondary planning, ensuring that all students are fully prepared to navigate the college admissions process, financial aid applications, and alternative post-secondary pathways. The College Advisor provides individualized counseling, organizes group workshops, partners with families, and collaborates with staff to ensure every student has a strong post-secondary plan. This role also includes meticulous tracking of student data, financial management of senior activities, maintaining post-secondary resources and bulletin boards, and coordinating college-related events and programming.
- Provide individualized counseling and guidance to students and families on the college application process, financial aid, scholarships, and post-secondary options.
- Coordinate and facilitate workshops, college fairs, application nights, FAFSA completion events, and family information sessions.
- Maintain, update, and organize college and post-secondary bulletin boards to ensure students have access to current information and opportunities.
- Collect, track, and analyze student post-secondary data including applications, acceptances, financial aid awards, and enrollment outcomes.
- Maintain meticulous data records and trackers to monitor student progress and outcomes.
- Manage cash logs and oversee collection of payments related to senior experiences, college trips, senior dues, and other post-secondary events, ensuring all collections follow proper financial protocols.
- Collaborate with school leadership and staff to identify students in need of additional post-secondary support or intervention.
- Serve as the liaison between the school and external college admissions representatives, scholarship organizations, and community partners.
- Support the development and implementation of college readiness programming within advisory or seminar classes.
- Provide timely communication to students, families, and staff regarding deadlines, application requirements, and upcoming college-related events.
- Dedicate time for after-school or weekend duties on an as-needed basis, particularly during peak college application periods.
Competencies & Qualifications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail, particularly in data tracking and financial management.
- Proficient in Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Forms, Slides, Drive).
- A student-centered, whatever it takes attitude.
- Ability to analyze and apply school achievement data to support student post-secondary planning.
- Familiarity with New York State Graduation Requirements and college admissions standards.
- Thorough understanding of best practices in high school counseling and post-secondary readiness.
- Experience coordinating school-wide events and managing multiple priorities.
- Ability to build positive, productive relationships with students, families, staff, and external partners.
- Bachelors degree required, Masters degree in counseling, education, or a related field preferred.
- School Counselor Certificate required or in progress.
- Bilingual preferred but not required.
