Vocational Instructor - Horticulture

POSITION SUMMARY: The Vocational Instructor will be responsible for the creation and implementation of educational and experiential programming in Whitney Hall School in the area of Horticulture. The Vocational Coordinator establishes educational programming, curriculum and implementation of the program.

The Vocational Instructor works as a member of a team with school and residential personnel at The Children’s Center of Hamden. The Vocational Instructor is responsible to the Whitney Hall School Principal. This individual shall be aware of and sensitive to the cultural diversity of the student/client population. This employee is expected to perform other assigned duties.

Accountable and responsible for the following results:

· Develop curriculum related to Horticulture for children and youth at Whitney Hall School and the Youth Work Program.

· Partner with teachers to implement curriculum and vocational training for youth.

· Aid in the supervision of the Work Program, year-round.

· Develops overall goals and objectives, both long and short-term, for the Horticulture Program and evaluates effectiveness.

· Orients, trains, coaches and schedules youth and Childcare Workers in the Youth Work Program related to Horticulture, landscaping, gardening.

· Coordinates, monitors and supervises activities related to the program.

· Partners with Program Supervisors, Administration, and Directors related to the Youth Work Program including the Dietary Department.

· Participates in the collection of data to monitor program effectiveness.

· Is aware of Agency Policies and Procedures and participates in their development as it relates to the Horticulture Program.

· Serves as a liaison to community resources.

· Develops and writes grants as necessary to enhance funding for the program.

· Maintains regular contact with internal and external treatment team members as necessary.

· Successfully complete CCG (Crisis Consulting Group) training and perform physical restraints with clients when needed.

· Other duties as assigned.

· Maintains all required agency mandatory training.

· Maintains appropriate personal boundaries with young people and families served at The Children's Center of Hamden. Adheres to The Children’s Center of Hamden’s Boundary Code of Ethics.

· Is aware of the Policy and Procedure Manuals and can access information as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree required. Certification as Master Gardener, Horticulture and/or Farming preferred.Previous Experience and/or Training: 2 to 5 years in program development, working with youth in a behavioral health setting and/or gardening, farming.

CERTIFICATIONS

A Valid Driver’s License with a safe driving record is required.
