Job Title: Dean of Students
FLSA: Exempt
Reporting Functions: Reports to Principal; supervises Maintenance staff

Job Function: The Dean of Students administers and implements the student attendance and discipline programs. This position also assists the Principal in student record keeping, coordination of Student Life, act as Safety Coordinator, supervises of Maintenance staff and perform other duties as need to support the Principal and the school.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages school operations in the absence of the Principal and/or Assistant Principal.


  • Assists the Principal in providing leadership with teachers and team leaders concerning instructional programs.


  • Assists the Principal in maintaining a positive school climate and a culture of character within the school.


  • Monitors daily student attendance and administers school attendance policies.


  • Implement a student management system that results in positive student behavior.


  • Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and student discipline is appropriate and equitable.


  • Administers appropriate discipline to all students as outlined by school Code of Student Conduct and Student Handbook. Confer with students and administer appropriate consequences.


  • Edit and update the Student Handbook per school year.


  • Coordinates and supervises detention hall, in-school suspension, extended school programs and Saturday school.


  • Monitors clerical assistants and the accurate compilation of daily attendance reports and records.


  • Coordinates and conducts appropriate parent/teacher conferences related to attendance and discipline.


  • Communicates daily with students, parents, and teachers regarding attendance and discipline matters.


  • Develops an operational understanding of and coordinates with outside support agencies for student services.


  • Researches, develops, and implements programs to improve student attendance and discipline.


  • Assists staff with behavior management plans for students with chronic discipline problems.


  • Supervises the cafeteria/lunches, athletic events, Maintenance staff, and Student Workers.


  • Act as the Safety Coordinator by planning, practicing, and supervising safe school policies including all drills, evacuations, etc., and keep records of all plans and practices.


  • Follow all mandated reporting procedures as designated by the Diocese of Allentown, Office of Youth Protection and Services, and ensure colleagues are aware of such policies and the appropriate actions to take for the student's safety.


  • Assists the Principal with the development of School Improvement Plans.


  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.


  • Perform all other duties as assigned.



Additional Conditions of Employment:
Candidate must be a practicing Catholic in good standing, have a deep knowledge of the Catholic faith, and agree to live by the tenets of the Catholic faith, including in lifestyle and on personal social media.

Minimum Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's degree, preferred)


  • PA Teacher's Certification required


  • 3-5 years of experience in a High School setting.



Other Requirements:

  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills.


  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.


  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.


  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.


  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart information to a range of clientele and/or media sources.


  • Knowledge of student support programs and services; ability to plan, assess, and evaluate programs.


  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, bend, push, pull, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is continuously interacting with the public, staff and students. The employee frequently must meet multiple demands from several people. The employee must maintain emotional control under stress. May be required, under specific circumstances, to provide physical restraint of students in danger of causing harm to themselves or others.

Working Conditions: Normal school/office environment; Full- Time; 12-month position; Administrator contract. Monday through Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.. May be required to work in excess of normal work hours to attend meetings or due to non-routine or emergency situations that may arise.
