Title: Adult Education ESL Instructor
Reports to: Senior Manager, Literacy Department: Workforce Development
Classification: Non-Exempt, Part-Time Location: Inkster, MI
Supervises: NA Shift: On-Site, Day Shift
Job Summary:
The Adult Education ESL Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to adult learners, primarily low-income women, in a supportive, inclusive, and trauma-informed environment. This role focuses on helping students improve English proficiency while integrating life skills, digital literacy, and career readiness. The ideal candidate is a certified teacher with prior adult ESL teaching experience, knowledgeable in career readiness standards, and familiar with state and federal adult education policies. The instructor must also be proficient in online teaching using Zoom and Google Classroom.
Responsibilities:
Instruction & Curriculum Delivery
- Develop and deliver student-centered ESL instruction aligned with College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS).
- Integrate contextualized instruction on job readiness, community engagement, and life skills.
- Teach in-person, remotely (via Zoom), and/or in hybrid settings, adapting materials and strategies accordingly.
- Utilize Google Classroom to post assignments, share resources, and support student learning outside of class.
Assessment & Progress Monitoring
- Administer standardized assessments (CASAS) to determine student placement and measure learning gains.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of student attendance, progress, and performance in accordance with state and federal requirements.
Student engagement and support
- Foster a respectful, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment tailored to adult learners.
- Support student persistence and goal setting through personalized feedback and encouragement.
- Identify and help address barriers to learning (e.g., digital literacy, access issues) in coordination with program staff.
Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure instructional practices align with WIOA Title II and state adult education guidelines.
- Submit required reports, assessments, and documentation in compliance with program policies.
Collaboration & Professional Development
- Collaborate with fellow instructors, program coordinators, and support staff to ensure consistent instruction and wraparound services.
- Participate in professional development related to adult education, digital tools, trauma-informed instruction, and equity-based practices.
Qualifications/Education/Licensing/Experience:
Required
- Valid teaching certification in ESL, Adult Education, or a related field.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or related discipline.
- Minimum 2 years of experience teaching adult English language learners.
- Familiarity with College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) for adult education.
- Knowledge of state and federal adult education guidelines (e.g., WIOA, Title II).
- Experience delivering instruction online via Zoom and managing content through Google Classroom.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and digital literacy skills.
Preferred
- Master’s degree in TESOL, Adult Education, or a related field.
- Bilingual (Spanish, Arabic, or other language relevant to the learner community).
- Experience working with low-income, immigrant, or refugee populations.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally responsive teaching practices

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Classes may be scheduled during mornings or afternoons depending on student needs.
- Instruction may occur in-person, online, or in hybrid formats.
