Position: Explorer Director

Location: 565 Morris Avenue, Bronx, NY 10451

Schedule: 35 hours per week

Salary: $50,000 - $70,000 per year

FLSA Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Job Summary

Responsible for the ongoing development, administration and evaluation of Clubhouse programs aimed at the social, educational and recreational development of boys 6 to 9 years of age with emphasis on inter-departmental activities, community outreach and staff development.

Job Requirements

BCNY is a COVID-19 proactive organization that follows applicable health and safety regulations to help protect our members and staff. To that end, we require that all BCNY employees be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. BCNY requires all staff to receive a booster shot that protects against COVID-19 once they become eligible. New employees will be asked to submit proof of full vaccination prior to their start date. BCNY treats proof of vaccination confidentially and consistent with applicable law, and will not use the information for any purpose other than to ensure compliance with BCNY’s mandatory vaccination policy. 

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates age-specific programs and activities for boys aged 6-9 including life skills, recreational, character development and healthy living programming. This includes assisting with planning, organizing, ensuring successful implementation, data collection and monitoring.
  • Builds strong relationships with members and families and work to ensure that individual needs (academic, emotional, social, physical) are met through the appropriate connection or coordination of programs and services. Collaborate with colleagues and other departments as needed.
  • Ensures the safety of all members at all times.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the mission of The Boys’ Club of New York and employ that to build a sound foundation in all department programs and activities.
  • Oversees the staffing and management of all part-time staff and volunteers working with this age group, including staff recruitment, hiring, onboarding, evaluating performance and coaching.
  • Manages staff schedules, ensuring adequate coverage and provides coverage as needed.
  • Leads professional development, staff meetings, and trainings for part-time staff as needed.
  • Creates a positive work atmosphere. Fosters teamwork and a constructive exchange of ideas.
  • Ensures that all staff members adhere to behavior, discipline, and safety policies.
  • Maintain high expectations for staff and ensure compliance.
  • Compiles data and tracks students for program monitoring, evaluation and reporting as required.
  • Manages the department effectively and within budget. Responsible for purchasing materials, supplies, and equipment designed to meet member needs.
  • Maintains the program area to foster physical and emotional safety, encourage creativity, and meet member needs.
  • Communicates clearly with administration, supervisors, peers, and direct reports.
  • Develops and builds culture of excellence in members and staff
  • Attends all staff meetings and supports Boys’ Clubs events, initiatives, and general organizational needs.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Elementary Education, Youth Development, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years work experience.
  • Minimum of two years successfully working with youth in a not-for-profit or public education organization.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of education and youth development (specifically ages 6-9); Demonstrated experience of activity planning and facilitation for youth, and working with a like population; ability to manage time effectively, think critically, communicate and comprehend oral and written information, and recognize and resolve problems as they arise; flexible and a team player.
