POSITION SUMMARY:
Provide support for Swim Team leadership, instruction and motivation for swim team participants, attend all local swim meets / team functions, promote the swim team program within association guidelines, and maintain a safe environment. Helps develop, organize, and implement high quality programs. Understands and employs a philosophy that the team purpose is to develop swimmers skills, teach good sportsmanship, and demonstrate a high level of integrity in a caring and nurturing environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Deliver thorough, age-appropriate workouts focusing on technique, endurance, stroke development, drills and within the YMCA guidelines or as directed by the Aquatic Director or Head Swim Team Coach.
- Work with the Aquatic Director or Head Swim Team Coach to learn to develop age-appropriate practices.
- Lead structured practices during assigned times as outlined by the Aquatic Director or Head Swim Team Coach
- Record all work-outs and track daily attendance as outlined by the Aquatic Director or Head Swim Team Coach and in compliance with best practices as outlined in YMCA and national certifications.
- Maintain open communication with parents and promote an environment that focuses on the development of the swimmer and cultivates relationships that create a collaborative swim team environment within YMCA philosophy, rules, guidelines, and policies
- Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment for swim team participants
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with swimmers and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Assists in all areas as assigned and completes assignments as directed by the supervisor.
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent course from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council). Any BLS certification is only good for one year.
- Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor
- Must obtain YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving within 30 days of hire
- Must obtain American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches within 30 days of hire
- Must demonstrate swimming skills at a minimum of a Stage 4 proficiency and in accordance with YMCA standards and have a strong foundation in stroke mechanics and be able to communicate effectively with swimmers and parents
- Experience as competitive swimmer preferred
- 1 years coaching or teaching experience preferred
- At least 16 years of age.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to instruct, observe, and demonstrate to participants proper stroke and competitive swim techniques
- Ability to lift and pull equipment 50 pounds, and to lift a small to average size child.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Must be in good physical condition to teach classes
- Must have ability to work inside and outside (i.e. humidity, hot, cold, inclement weather conditions)
- Must have ability to concentrate in a loud environment
