The Assistant Project Manager will provide technical leadership to project teams who will be working on planning, evaluation, design and implementation of civil engineering projects. The successful candidate will lead the study-phase and/or design-phase of projects related to the civil, environmental, construction and industrial fields plan, direct and coordinate the development of new civil engineering designs. Responsibilities include leading the research and development stage of projects, creating detailed project plans, and proposing budgets, staffing and equipment needs. The Assistant Project Manager would regularly have interaction with employees outside of their department, regularly have interaction with clients, regularly interact with the public (agencies, government entities, etc.), and occasionally participate in selling to clients, and is frequently expected to engage in business development and client retention efforts The assistant project manager is expected to manage assigned employees for the designated project. And is expected to be an example of professional presence, representing the Company and the department in a positive light, and have intermediate level of software knowledge of at least two (2) engineering software packages.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Consults with and provides guidance to project stakeholders and managerial staff regarding engineering requirements for construction of various designs, and modifications.
- Uses design software and drawing tools to accurately render and communicate designs; plans and designs other necessary improvement related to type of project assigned.
- Sets design specifications by computing appropriate engineering requirements (i.e. – water flow rates, traffic demand, earth work balance, etc.).
- Plans projects based on the analysis of relevant materials such as drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, survey reports, maps, and other geologic and topographical data.
- Drafts and presents reports on topics related to projects such as detention reports and engineering due diligence reports.
- Perform calculations for materials, equipment, and labor needed to determine probable construction cost.
- Collaborates with architects, contractors, and other engineers to ensure projects progress properly.
- Collaborates with surveyors (or directs and participates in surveying) to establish installations or reference points, grades, elevations, and other factors that will affect construction.
- Monitors project progress and ensures design specifications and standards are met.
- Write proposals for basic level projects.
- Able to complete assigned projects independently as assigned with minimal oversight beyond initial handoff.
- Able to teach and explain to others the methodologies used by The Company.
- Advanced level of understanding of design tools and civil engineering practices.
- Fundamental design of projects for sites.
- Learning how to positively impact financial metrics of projects.
- Interacting with the client to understand the goals of the client and relaying those back to the design team.
- Develop, mentor, train, evaluate, coach/discipline, acknowledge, and thank assigned staff.
- Guiding assigned team to ensure client goals at being met on time, on budget, and accurately.

- Responsible for price proposals (SOW's), proposals, requests for quotes (RFQs), statement of qualifications (SOQs).
- Assist in the successful client kickoff meetings.
- Client Nurturing
- Responsible for touch base activities with previous/current clients.
- Networking
- Participate in appropriate meetings, association memberships, and events to establish and build networking contacts.
- Project/Client Opportunities
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Education, & Experience
- Civil Engineering Degree (or related)
- Has or is working towards Professional Engineer license
- Preferred minimum 5 consecutive years of Civil Engineering experience
- Public speaking ability
- Assign Co-Ops, Graduate Civil Engineers, and Associate Civil Engineers projects/pieces of projects aligned with their abilities.
- Review project for compliance with regulatory requirements based on knowledge of state and local regulations
Required Skills/Abilities
- Basic understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools.
- Proficient in computer-assisted design (CAD) and other design, data recording, and analyzation software.
- Basic understanding of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of site and transportation infrastructure improvements.
- Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to be both creative and analytical.
- Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to travel to various project sites.
- Must be able to access and navigate job sites and construction areas.
