Relay Commissioning Technician

Location: North Carolina or South Carolina (Travel Required)
Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Relay Commissioning Technician to join our growing team, supporting utility, substation, and transmission projects across the Carolinas. The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge of protective relay systems, excellent troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality commissioning and testing services. This position requires regional travel but must be based in either North Carolina or South Carolina.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform relay testing, calibration, and commissioning for transmission, distribution, and generation protection systems.

  • Commission protective relays, control panels, and associated equipment at substations and power plants.

  • Verify protective settings and schemes for correct operation according to project specifications and NERC/FERC standards.

  • Conduct functional testing on various types of relays including (but not limited to) SEL, GE Multilin, ABB, and Siemens products.

  • Read and interpret protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, and system layouts.

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose issues with protection systems during commissioning and operational phases.

  • Document test results, create detailed commissioning reports, and communicate findings to project managers and clients.

  • Collaborate with engineering teams, contractors, and utility clients to support project execution.

  • Adhere to company safety policies and industry regulations at all times.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 3+ years of hands-on experience in protective relay testing and commissioning.

  • Strong knowledge of substation protection systems, relay logic, SCADA integration, and control systems.

  • Proficiency with relay test equipment (Omicron, Doble, Megger, etc.).

  • Ability to read and understand electrical drawings, protection schematics, and wiring diagrams.

  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and documentation skills.

  • Willingness to travel regionally throughout the Carolinas (overnight stays may be required based on project needs).

  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • NETA (Level II or III) Certification preferred but not required.

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.

  • Experience with SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories) relays highly preferred.

  • Knowledge of NERC/FERC compliance standards.
