General Description of Duties and Responsibilities:
Residential Advisors are responsible for maintaining a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment which fosters growth and rehabilitation and facilitates the development of mutual aid/self help skills among individuals. Staffs primary role is to provide the appropriate and effective behavioral supports tailored to the needs and desires of each individual to enable each to live as independently as possible. Residential Advisors are expected to recognize when an individual is in a crisis and be able to utilize the appropriate comprehensive crisis management training, psychiatric, medical back up services and/or the crisis team involved with the individual. The Residential Advisors play a critical role in the overall success of our Residential Services and are looked at as natural role models.
Specific Duties:
<ol>
<li>Assist/monitor/teach individuals with preparation of daytime activities; encourage good personal hygiene, and behavior appropriate in their home or apartment.</li>
<li> Assist the Residential supervisor in the assessment of each individuals(s) ability, interests and need areas toward independent living. Provide input in the development of each ISP. The staffs behavior and interaction with individuals shall be directed towards the attainment of goals set forth within each ISP.</li>
<li>Assist/monitor/teach individuals(s) in budgeting skills.</li>
<li> Teach self medication skills according to ODP regulations, and when appropriate supervise in medication administration.</li>
<li>Assist/monitor/teach individuals engaging in daily chores.</li>
<li>Assist/monitor/teach individuals as needed in grocery shopping, menu planning, meal preparation and clean up.</li>
<li> Meet with individuals (as needed) on an individual basis to discuss concerns, problems.</li>
<li>Assist/monitor/teach individuals in holding house meetings and informal discussion groups with peers.</li>
<li> Handle emergency situations appropriately, (according to AIMED and ODP policies). Utilize crisis interventions when necessary.</li>
<li> Teach and/or support individuals in utilizing public transportation. Transport individuals to appropriate appointments when necessary (i.e. person requires assistance at appointment).</li>
<li> Perform daily record keeping (i.e. data collection, daily logs). Exchange information with next shift and/or with support staff.</li>
<li> Teach and be supportive of basic nutrition. Assist individuals to utilize community resources from nutritional counseling.</li>
<li> Teach relationship building skills.</li>
<li> Teach community integration; assist individuals in joining community organizations of their choice.</li>
<li> Teach problem solving skills/resolving conflicts.</li>
<li> Provide leisure/recreational activities of individual(s) choice, increase individuals self initiative in leisure activities.</li>

Qualifications:

<li> The minimum professional qualifications for Residential Advisors are a High School Diploma and one year of Human Service work experience. Training provided to those with less experience.</li>

<li> Must be 21 years old or older.</li>
<li> Autonomy ability to work without immediate supervision.</li>
<li> Interpersonal sensitivity (objective awareness of others, tactful interaction, ease in establishing limits).</li>
<li> Reliability and flexibility.</li>
<li> Insight and the ability to articulate it.</li>

Collaborates with Infection Control, Pharmacy, and Quality Departments. -Assists in formulating long and short term with goals within the clinical areas as participates in evaluation of the results. -Conducts unit rounds to determine current and future needs for in-services to ensure provision of quality care. -Assists Unit Nurses in maintaining standards of practice for resident care. -Communicates and collaborates with all member of resident care team to provide optimum care to our residents. -Monitors Nursing employee’s adherence to facility policies related to wound care, meal service, safeguarding of controlled medications, provision of resident care, etc. -Inspects Nursing Service areas and monitor practices for compliance with current applicable regulations, on regular basis. -Has an active role in identifying and addressing quality issues, and implementing corrective action and plan as necessary. -Participates in programs designed for in-service education and orientation classes for new Nursing Department Hires, as well as ongoing in-service education programs. -As part of assessing staff competence, randomly monitors and reviews the documentation on new admission making certain that documentation was done correctly. --Working Conditions: -Will work in a well-lighted and ventilated area. -Will be subject to frequent interruptions. -May be asked to work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary. **See Attachment for Full Job Description** Skills: Required Skills &amp; Experience: -Previous experience in in-service education. -Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language fluently. -Must meet or exceed all health standards and requirements for the position as established by NYDOH and all other regulatory agencies. -Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this Center which includes a medical and physical examination. -Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds. -Perform tasks that may involve exposure to the resident’s blood/body fluids. -Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents, if necessary. Preferred Skills &amp; Experience: -Acute or Long Term Pediatric Experience. -Ventilator experience.
